From : Hoda Abu Al wafa Sent : Monday, September 19, 2005 2:11 AM To : arabtimesnewspaper@hotmail.com Subject : Salam arab times, I spoke to you on the phone on Saturday about my father's story. I will try to be as detailed as I can The story is that he was studying in France during the 70s and when he graduated, he went back by car with his friend through lebanon and syria to amman to live with his family. This was in 1972. At the time, he had some electrical goods which he brought with him. He stayed for 4 days in Damascus and continued through to Amman, and everything went well during his trip. He then moved to Australia in 1978 (when I was 5 years old) and has never gone back to amman but one time when his mother died. He lives a good life in Australia and has his own business and had helped a lot of our relatives immigrate there. This year, on 12/7 he went back to Amman for a visit for the first time in many years and had made some plans with some friends of his to go to Syria for a few days and then rent a car from there and go to Beirut for a few more days. (he is an Australian citizen). They went to Syria on 22/7. At the airport in Damascus, they searched through their amazingly advanced database and took his passport and told him that he is detained in Syria because he is prosecuted for something he did 33 years ago!! Apparently, according to them, he did not check the electrical goods out of the Syrian borders when he went to Amman 33 years ago They told him he needs to see the Mukhabrat !!!! And gave him a transit visa or whatever. He did not know why, they did not tell him (of course), and he was very confused and worried. When he called us that day I could not sleep. He went to mukhabarat the next day and of course, they told him that his file is not there, they need to retreive it, he needs to come back the next day. But since it was already thursday, they told him to come back on saturday, and did not explain what it was all about !! I swear Mr Mohammed it was a nightmare. The man was detained in Syria and did not know why. And I dont even know why he needed to see mokhabarat ,, not jamarek. Allah yel'an abouhom He went on Saturday and it turns out the reason for all this nonsense is that back in 1972, he did not legally check the electrical goods out of Syria, which means that they stayed in, meaning it was a case of TAHREEB !!!!!!!! IMAGINE !!! he told them this cannot be true, he use his passport to get them out of Syria and he took them to AMman !! They asked for proof of this !! I swear, after 33 years,, I cannot believe it He told them ya jama'aa shou hal haki ,, mish ma'ool ,, they treated him like shit (sorry) and as you can imagine, they asked for money. They charged $7000 which apparently is for all these years! I am sure they took the money themselves. awlad il kalb. And they said that he should either pay or he will be referred to the supreme court in which case he might get imprisoned !!!!!!! Thank God he had money, so he paid them for his freedom and they let him out. Can you believe this Can you believe the lack of humanity in these countries? My father is exactly like Mr. Osama Fawzi, he hates this region and would never go back to it again. I am not shocked at this, it's so typical of these bastards. I want the whole world to know through Arab Times that the Syrian government is one of the worst in the Arab world, and I dare anyone to disagree. Please PLEASE PLEASE post this story on your respectful website (in Arabic, preferably), and please keep my email to your good self. My best regards to Dr. Osama Fawzi , whom I shall respect and admire as much as I do my father.
